WELCOME!
This is the Hydraulic Fracturing Technical Section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).
This technical section encompasses the subject of hydraulic fracturing technology through online events, online networking, workshops, conferences, and by promoting diversity in the industry. The purpose of this section shall be to provide a forum from which technical professionals and academia can:
  • Share knowledge, experience, and best practices
  • Identify major issues and technology areas on which to focus cooperation and discussions
  • Maintain and promote industry awareness of related issues and technologies
  • Enhance their own technical competencies that meet the needs of the petroleum industry
We will accomplish our mission through the transfer of knowledge at study groups, monthly meetings, forums, and workshops.

Title: Cementing: The Good, The Bad, And the Isolated - Techniques to Measure Cement Quality and Its Impact on Well Performance

Summary: This paper, presented at the SPE Hydraulic Fracturing Technology Conference and Exhibition, delves into the critical role of cement isolation in the effectiveness of well completions, particularly in horizontal, multi-stage, hydraulically stimulated oil and gas wells. With the advent of unconventional drilling, the necessity for multiple cement jobs, costing significantly, has become a standard practice. As cluster spacing tightens, the demand for high-quality cementing is underscored, raising questions about its direct impact on well performance. The study employs various diagnostic techniques, including ultrasonic imaging, optical fiber, radioactive tracer, and downhole pressure gauges, to assess cement isolation quality. These methodologies are linked back to well performance, considering both new completions and refracs across multiple US basins. The paper suggests that the need for high-quality cement isolation may vary depending on the size of the annulus being cemented, with smaller annuli presenting both challenges in cementing due to higher Equivalent Circulating Densities (ECDs) and potentially less impact on well performance due to significant pressure drops during stimulation. Case studies within the paper evaluate the importance of cement isolation in enhancing well performance. The findings are pertinent not only to oil and gas reservoirs but also to enhanced geothermal applications, emphasizing the role of effective fracture uniformity. In summary, the paper highlights the complexity of achieving high-quality cement isolation in lateral wells and its varying impact on well performance. It underscores the importance of accurate diagnostic techniques in measuring cement quality and the necessity of high-quality cementing practices to ensure optimal well performance.

SPE HyFTS OUTSTANDING GRADUATE STUDENT AWARD 2023

Congratulations to Ashtiwi Bahri, Colorado School of Mines, Jiayue Chen, Texas A&M University, and Jhon Uribe-Patino, University of Alberta.

Three students will be recognized by the SPE Hydraulic Fracturing Technical Section (HyFTS) with an Outstanding Graduate Student Award for graduate students pursuing research in hydraulic fracturing related areas:
 - Ashtiwi Bahri, Colorado School of Mines
 - Jiayue Chen, Texas A&M University
 - Jhon Uribe-Patino, University of Alberta
The students were selected for this award based on their respective resume, recommendation letter and summary of their technical contribution, that may have resulted in a conference presentation and/or a journal publication related to Hydraulic
Fracturing, which may encompass topics related to state-of-the-art and future needs.
Recipients also must be an SPE member in good standing and a member of the SPE HyFTS. Recipients may only be recognized once with this award. Award certificates will be presented to the students at the SPE Hydraulic Fracturing Technology Conference and Exhibition scheduled for 6-8 February 2024 in The Woodlands, TX.  Each student will also receive $500.
